Yooperlite owl, carved and polished, 9cm tall and 500g. A substantial piece with real weight to it.
In daylight it looks like a speckled grey stone, black and white and cream with a few warm flecks. Under a 365nm UV torch the whole carving lights up in bright orange across the chest, face and body. The two photographs show the same owl, first in daylight and then under UV.
What a yooperlite owl means
Yooperlite is syenite carrying fluorescent sodalite, found along the Lake Superior shoreline in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. It only came to wider notice in 2017, so it has no long tradition behind it and it would be dishonest to invent one.
What practitioners work with is what the stone actually does. It looks ordinary until the right light hits it, and then it does not. It has attached itself to hidden things becoming visible, to truth, and to what is carried underneath the surface. That is a modern correspondence and an honest one.
The owl is a natural match, since both belong to seeing in the dark.

Care
A hard, robust stone that will take handling. The glow does not fade with use and sunlight will not wear it out.
You will need a 365nm UV torch to see the effect. Cheaper 395nm blacklights give a much weaker result, which is the most common reason people think a piece is not reacting. Dust with a dry cloth. Cleanse with sound, breath or moonlight.
