Choosing your first tarot deck
A standard tarot deck has 78 cards: 22 Major Arcana for the big themes of life and 56 Minor Arcana in four suits for everyday matters. If you are new to tarot, choose a deck whose pictures speak to you, because the images do much of the teaching. Decks built on the Rider Waite Smith system, first published in London in 1909, are the easiest to learn with, as most books follow them.
A little tarot history
Tarot began as a card game in fifteenth century Italy. Reading the cards for meaning came later, in late eighteenth century France, and grew into the practice readers know today.
