Hematoid Quartz (Fire Quartz)

Hematoid quartz, sold in much of the trade as fire quartz, is clear or milky quartz that grew with hematite caught inside it. Where the hematite has oxidised it reads rust red and orange. Where it has not, it stays metallic grey. Most pieces carry both.

Hematoid is the accurate name and fire quartz is the trade name. Same stone, and you will see it under either.

It is not carnelian, which is a solid orange chalcedony with no inclusions, and not golden healer, which takes its colour from iron staining rather than from hematite crystals.

Traditional practice treats it as grounding rather than lifting. Quartz is held to amplify and hematite is one of the oldest grounding stones in the correspondence tables, so hematoid quartz is usually described as amplification with something holding the other end of the rope. It is placed at the root in the chakra tables, and sometimes at the sacral where the red runs strong.

Quartz is 7 on the Mohs scale and hard wearing. Long spells in strong direct sunlight can fade the red, so a windowsill is not the best home for it.
