Description
Cajeput essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves and twigs of Melaleuca cajuputi (also written cajeput or cajuput), a tree native to the coastal regions of Southeast Asia and northern Australia, particularly common in the Indonesian islands, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. The name cajeput comes from the Malay “kayu putih” meaning “white wood”, referring to the tree’s white papery bark.
Cajeput essential oil has a fresh, clean, camphoraceous, and slightly fruity aroma with strong medicinal, herbal, and slightly sweet undertones. The main constituent is 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol), typically present at 45 to 65%, which gives it its characteristic fresh, medicinal, eucalyptus-like quality. It also contains alpha-terpinene and alpha-terpineol, contributing additional freshness and complexity compared to pure eucalyptus oil.
In aromatherapy, cajeput essential oil is used similarly to eucalyptus and tea tree for its penetrating, cleansing, and respiratory support properties. It has a long history of traditional use in Southeast Asian medicine for respiratory conditions and as a topical liniment. It blends well with eucalyptus, lavender, rosemary, tea tree, and peppermint essential oils in respiratory and clearing diffuser blends.
Cajeput essential oil should be diluted before skin application. As with other cineole-rich oils, avoid direct application near the face of very young children. This 10ml bottle is suitable for use in diffusers, oil burners, and diluted blends. Not for internal use.
