Myrrh essential oil is steam distilled from the resin of Commiphora myrrha, a small thorny tree native to Northeast Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, particularly Somalia, Ethiopia, and Yemen. Myrrh resin has been prized for thousands of years, valued in ancient Egypt for embalming, in religious ceremony across the Middle East, and in traditional medicine in multiple cultures.
Myrrh essential oil has a warm, rich, slightly smoky, and balsamic aroma with earthy, medicinal, and slightly bitter undertones. The main aromatic constituents include curzerene, furanodiene, and other sesquiterpenes and furanosesquiterpenes, which contribute to its deep, complex, resinous character. Like frankincense, myrrh has a long history as a sacred incense resin and its oil retains much of this ancient, contemplative quality.
In aromatherapy, myrrh essential oil is used in grounding, meditative, and emotionally supportive blends. It is a classic base note in natural perfumery where its long-lasting, resinous quality anchors lighter notes. In skin care, myrrh has been used in preparations for mature, cracked, or weathered skin. It blends beautifully with frankincense, sandalwood, lavender, rose, patchouli, and other woody and resinous oils.
Myrrh essential oil should not be used during pregnancy. Always dilute before skin application. This 10ml bottle is suitable for use in diffusers, oil burners, perfumery, and diluted skin care and massage preparations. Not for internal use.
