Sandalwood amyris essential oil is steam distilled from the wood of Amyris balsamifera, a small tree native to Haiti and other Caribbean islands, also known as West Indian sandalwood or Caribbean sandalwood. Amyris is not botanically related to true sandalwood (Santalum species) but has a similar woody, creamy aroma and is widely used as a more sustainable and affordable sandalwood substitute.
Sandalwood amyris essential oil has a soft, warm, woody, and slightly creamy aroma with sweet, balsamic undertones. The main aromatic constituents include sesquiterpene alcohols including bisabolol and related compounds, which give it a smooth, rounded character. Compared to true Mysore or Australian sandalwood, amyris is slightly less rich and milky but offers an excellent woody base note at a much more accessible price point.
In aromatherapy, sandalwood amyris essential oil is used as a calming and grounding base note. It is a popular addition to meditation blends, sleep preparations, and relaxation massage blends. In natural perfumery, it functions as an affordable sandalwood substitute and fixative, helping to anchor and extend more volatile top and middle notes. It blends beautifully with lavender, rose, jasmine, frankincense, patchouli, and cedarwood.
Sandalwood amyris essential oil is generally well-tolerated and is considered one of the safer essential oils for skin application when diluted. This 10ml bottle is suitable for use in diffusers, oil burners, perfumery, and diluted skin and massage preparations. Not for internal use.
