Ylang ylang III essential oil is steam distilled from the freshly picked flowers of Cananga odorata, a tropical tree native to the Philippines and Indonesia, now cultivated across Madagascar, Comoros, and other tropical regions. The distillation of ylang ylang is performed in multiple stages, producing grades known as Extra, I, II, III, and Complete. Grade III is the final fraction collected and is softer and more rounded in character than the earlier grades.
Ylang ylang III essential oil has a rich, sweet, floral, and slightly balsamic aroma with fruity and woody undertones. Compared to Extra grade, the III fraction has a slightly less intense, more balanced floral character, making it more versatile for blending without overpowering other components. The main aromatic constituents include linalool, geranyl acetate, and benzyl acetate, which together create its characteristic exotic floral profile.
In aromatherapy, ylang ylang essential oil is used for its calming and uplifting effects. It is one of the classic oils associated with relaxation and is frequently included in sensual, romantic, and evening blends. It combines beautifully with bergamot, rose, jasmine, sandalwood, vetiver, and patchouli. Its warm floral quality makes it a valued base and heart note in natural perfumery.
