Description
Brazilian Blue Kyanite takes its name from the Ancient Greek word kyanos, meaning dark blue, and it is easy to see why. Those long silvery blades with their shifting blue depth are genuinely striking, and no two specimens look quite the same.
Mineralogically it is an aluminium silicate, chemical formula Al2SiO5, formed under high pressure and temperature within metamorphic rock. The blue colour comes from trace amounts of iron and titanium within the crystal structure. One of its most interesting geological qualities is its anisotropic hardness. The Mohs hardness runs at 4 to 5 along the length of the blade and 6 to 7 across the width, making it one of the few minerals where hardness varies depending on direction. The crystal system is triclinic.
Working with it
The free form specimen format preserves the natural bladed structure of the crystal as it forms within the host rock. This is not a polished piece and is not intended to be. The raw form is part of what makes a kyanite specimen worth having.
Blue Kyanite works primarily with the Throat and Third Eye chakras, supporting clear communication, self expression, and intuitive awareness. It is widely regarded as a stone that does not accumulate or hold stagnant energy in the way many other crystals do, which makes it a natural companion piece rather than something that needs to sit separately.
It works well paired with Sodalite for communication work, or with Clear Quartz where amplification of intention is wanted.
Care
Because it does not readily accumulate energy, Blue Kyanite needs less frequent cleansing than most stones. Sound or moonlight are both well suited to it. Avoid prolonged water exposure, as this can affect the surface over time.
Each specimen varies in the depth of blue, the density of striations, and the amount of host rock matrix present. The piece you receive is genuinely one of a kind.
