This is garnet in matrix rather than a single garnet crystal, and the difference is worth understanding before you buy.
A single crystal garnet sphere is cut from one stone and reads as solid red throughout. This one is a section of the rock the garnets grew in, which means dozens of individual burgundy crystals set through a dark host rock, each one with its own shape and its own face.
What you are looking at
The garnets run from oxblood to a deep wine red, and they sit in a matrix that is near black with a fine silky grain to it where the light crosses it at an angle.
Cream and pale veining threads between them, and there are patches of olive and dark green in places. Some garnet faces take the polish to a shine. Others stay matte. That variation is the material, not the workmanship, and it is how every matrix piece of this kind comes out.
Up close the garnet faces show a crazed, granular texture where the crystals meet the surface. That is the crystal structure exposed by the cut.
About this piece
At 951g and 81mm across, this is the largest sphere in stock by a considerable margin. It is close to a kilogram. Two hands to lift it comfortably, and it needs a stand and a stable surface rather than a narrow shelf.
The weight is the thing people react to first. Garnet is a dense mineral and a sphere this size in this material carries real heft, which matters if you work by touch and weight rather than by looking.

Caring for your almandine garnet sphere
Garnet itself is hard, 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, which is harder than quartz. But this piece is mixed material and the matrix around the garnets is softer than they are.
That matters in two ways. The surface will never be uniformly glassy, because two different hardnesses cannot take the same polish. And over years the softer matrix is the part that will mark, so keep it away from grit and away from harder stones.
The real risk with this piece is its weight. Nearly a kilogram of stone will damage a floor, a table or a foot if it rolls off. Keep it in its stand, well back from any edge, and lift it with two hands.
A dry soft cloth is all it needs. No acidic cleaners and no ultrasonic cleaner, because vibration finds the boundary between garnet and matrix.
To cleanse, use sound, breath or moonlight.
