Yule

Yule marks the winter solstice, around 21 December, the longest night of the year and the moment the light begins to return. It is one of the oldest midwinter celebrations, and many of its traditions live on in Christmas today: evergreens brought indoors, a log burned on the hearth and candles lit against the dark.

Setting a Yule altar

Gold, red and green candles, sprigs of pine or holly, and a little frankincense, cinnamon or cedar on the burner make a simple Yule altar. Many people light a candle at sunset on the solstice and keep watch until morning to welcome the sun back.

Yule crystals
