The chevrons are the pattern people recognise. White quartz and purple amethyst grew in alternating layers, and cutting through those layers on a curve exposes them as zigzags, so the white runs across the surface in sharp peaks rather than straight lines. On this piece they cut right across the widest part and reappear on the opposite face.

The purple across this amethyst sphere runs from deep and saturated in patches to pale lavender where the quartz takes over. It is not an even colour and it is not meant to be, and the patches of strong purple sit where the crystal grew thickest.

What this amethyst sphere looks like in person

The band of jasper is the part that makes this one unusual. It crosses one face as a wide stripe edged in cream, running from brick red through to a warm mustard ochre, the two colours coming from hematite and goethite in the silica. Jasper and amethyst growing in the same cavity is common enough geologically and still uncommon to see cut into a sphere this cleanly.

There are white veins running through the body where the stone healed along old fractures. They catch the light as bright lines and then disappear as you turn it. This is a large sphere at 73mm and it has real weight in the hand at 489g, which is most of the appeal of a piece this size.

The polish is high and even all over, including across the jasper, which takes a shine differently from the quartz around it. Every piece is photographed on its own, and what you see in the images is what is sent.

Traditional correspondences

An amethyst sphere is most often kept for the head rather than the heart. Traditional practice puts amethyst with sleep, with a mind that will not settle, and with the kind of quiet needed before anything else can happen.

Chevron banding is worked with slightly differently. Where plain amethyst is reached for to soften, the banded form is usually reached for when calm alone is not enough and something needs to be seen clearly as well. The white quartz is read as the cutting edge and the purple as the steadying.

An amethyst sphere sends in all directions rather than pointing, which is why spheres tend to be kept in shared rooms rather than on a working altar.

Caring for your amethyst sphere

Amethyst fades. This is the one thing worth knowing. Prolonged direct sunlight pulls the purple out permanently and the paler areas go first. A bright room is fine. A south facing sill in summer is not.

This amethyst sphere sits at 7 on the Mohs scale, hard enough for daily handling and soft enough to scuff against other quartz. Keep it clear of points and clusters.

The healed veins are part of the stone rather than damage, but they are still the lines a knock would follow. At 489g this one has enough weight to break something, including itself, so treat the drop risk seriously.

Spheres roll. Keep this one in its stand when it is not being handled, and lift it with two hands.
