What howlite is
Howlite is a calcium borosilicate mineral, usually found as chalky white nodules threaded with grey or cream veins. It is a soft stone, around 3.5 on the Mohs scale, and polishes to a gentle satin sheen. Because it takes colour so easily, howlite is often dyed to look like turquoise, but in its natural state it is the quiet white you see here.
Howlite meaning and traditional correspondences
In traditional practice howlite is a stone of calm, patience and restful sleep, kept close when the mind is busy or the day has been long. It is linked with the crown chakra and with the air sign Gemini, and its pale, quiet colour sits naturally with the waning moon, a time for letting go and slowing down.
A howlite tower is often placed in a bedroom, a reading corner or a meditation space, where its upright point is said to gather and steady the energy of the room. It suits Samhain and the darker half of the year, when rest and reflection come to the fore.
Correspondences are traditional and are offered as part of a practice, not as a substitute for medical or professional advice.
Caring for your howlite tower
Howlite is soft and slightly porous, so keep it away from water, oils and cleaning sprays, and dust it with a soft dry cloth. Set it down gently, as the point and edges can chip if knocked. Cleanse with sound, breath or moonlight.
