- Large, black orbicular, 20cm, 618g, £62. A deep charcoal ground scattered with orbs in gold, ochre, cream and soft grey white, some in tight rings and some opened into small sparkling pockets, with gold veining threading between them.
- D, black, 18cm, 453g, £34. Black and charcoal through the middle, capped with warm orange and ochre at the tip and again at the base, with fine white lines and small sparkling pockets running through.
- A, sea green, 17cm, 713g, £42. Translucent sea green and teal with a broad sweep of peach and golden yellow through the upper half. One face turns to white and moss green near the base, with a small sparkling cave at the foot.
- C, moss green, 13cm, 456g, £32. Deep forest and sea green with paler moss green swirls and soft white flecks, a fine white line crossing the upper face, and hints of grey violet towards the tip.
- B, sea green, 9cm, 250g, £18. A glossy little tower in teal, blue green and soft purple, with swirls of peach and gold and tiny sparkling seams.
Every tower is photographed as it is, under ordinary light and without lifting the colour. Ocean jasper varies more than almost any stone we carry, so it is worth looking through all the photos for the one that speaks to you.
About ocean jasper
Ocean jasper is a mix of chalcedony and quartz, and takes its name from the sea, where the first finds were gathered along a shoreline at low tide. It is best known for its round orbs, the little rings and eyes that give it the old name orbicular jasper.
Not every piece carries orbs. Newer finds have brought out stone in sea greens, teals, purples and peach with very few orbs or none at all, just like towers A, B and C here. Darker stone, often called black ocean jasper, carries charcoal and black with bands of orange and ochre, as in tower D and the large orbicular tower.
Where the stone left small hollows as it formed, tiny quartz crystals grew inside, which is where the sparkle comes from.
Traditional correspondences
Ocean jasper is traditionally known as a stone of joy, calm and gentle renewal, and is often linked with the heart and throat chakras. Its connection with the sea gives it a soothing, flowing feel, and it is often reached for to lift the mood, ease tension and encourage kinder self talk. An ocean jasper tower brings a little of that coastal calm to a desk, a bedside or an altar.
Correspondences are traditional and are offered as part of a practice, not as a substitute for medical or professional advice.
Caring for ocean jasper
Ocean jasper is a hard stone, around 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, so it is happy on an open shelf. The small sparkling pockets can gather dust, so a soft dry brush is the best way to keep them bright. To cleanse, use sound, breath or moonlight.
