Coriander seed essential oil is steam distilled from the dried ripe seeds of Coriandrum sativum, a herbaceous annual plant native to the Mediterranean and Middle East but now cultivated worldwide. Coriander seed has been used in cooking and medicine for thousands of years, with records of its cultivation dating back to ancient Egypt.
Coriander seed essential oil has a sweet, warm, spicy, and slightly woody aroma with light citrus and floral undertones. It is notably different from coriander leaf oil, which has a fresh, green, herbal character. The dominant constituent of coriander seed oil is linalool, typically present at 60 to 80%, which contributes to its smooth, rounded, slightly floral sweetness.
In aromatherapy, coriander seed essential oil is used as a gentle, warming oil with digestive and stress-relieving associations. It is a versatile oil that blends well with other spice oils including ginger, cardamom, and black pepper, as well as with citrus oils such as bergamot and orange, and with floral oils including lavender and rose. It is a popular middle note in natural perfumery.
