Cornmint essential oil is steam distilled from the aerial parts of Mentha arvensis, field mint, a species of mint native to Eurasia and now the most widely cultivated mint species in the world, particularly in India and China. Cornmint is distinct from peppermint (Mentha piperita) and is used as the primary industrial source of natural menthol worldwide.
Cornmint essential oil has a sharp, intensely cool, fresh, and powerfully minty aroma. The dominant constituent is menthol, typically present at 40 to 60%, which creates the characteristic cool, penetrating sensation that cornmint and peppermint are known for. Cornmint tends to have a higher menthol content and a sharper, more medicinal quality than peppermint, with less of the sweeter, herbal notes.
In aromatherapy, cornmint essential oil is used similarly to peppermint for its cooling, invigorating, and respiratory support properties. It is popular in diffuser blends for mental alertness and focus, and in cooling massage preparations for tired muscles and overheated skin. It is a common ingredient in sports preparations, natural insect repellent blends, and cooling skin care formulations.
