Cypress essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves, twigs, and cones of Cupressus sempervirens, the Mediterranean cypress tree, native to the eastern Mediterranean and western Asia. The cypress tree is one of the most iconic trees of the Mediterranean landscape, instantly recognisable for its tall, narrow, columnar form. It has strong cultural associations with longevity and the afterlife across Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cultures.
Cypress essential oil has a fresh, clean, woody, and slightly smoky aroma with green, resinous, and slightly spicy undertones. The main aromatic constituents include alpha-pinene, delta-3-carene, and cedrol, which together create its characteristic dry, clean, woody character. It has a distinctly Mediterranean quality that is often described as capturing the essence of a cypress grove in the heat of summer.
In aromatherapy, cypress essential oil is used in diffuser blends for its refreshing, grounding, and focus-supporting properties. It is also used in massage blends, particularly preparations for legs and circulation. In natural perfumery, cypress adds a clean, woody, slightly astringent quality and is used in both masculine and feminine fragrance compositions.
