Hyssop essential oil is steam distilled from the flowering tops and leaves of Hyssopus officinalis, a perennial herb native to the Mediterranean region, central Asia, and southern Europe. Hyssop has been used as a medicinal, culinary, and ritual herb for thousands of years. It is mentioned in ancient texts including the Bible and was used in traditional European herbal medicine extensively.
Hyssop essential oil has a warm, herbaceous, slightly sweet, and camphoraceous aroma with spicy and medicinal undertones. The main aromatic constituents include pinocamphone and isopinocamphone (ketones), plus beta-pinene, which together create its characteristic distinctive herbal-medicinal character. The ketone content makes hyssop a potent oil that should be used with care and in low concentrations.
In aromatherapy, hyssop essential oil is used in small amounts in respiratory support blends and in preparations for the nervous system. It is valued for its complex, distinctive herbal quality in natural perfumery, where it contributes a refined Mediterranean herb note. Due to its ketone content, it requires particular attention to dilution and contraindications. It blends well with lavender, rosemary, sage, clary sage, and citrus oils.
Hyssop essential oil should not be used during pregnancy or by those with epilepsy due to its ketone content. Use only at low dilutions (0.5 to 1%).
