Description
Juniper berry essential oil is steam distilled from the ripe or unripe berries (and sometimes needles) of Juniperus communis, the common juniper, a coniferous shrub or small tree native to the Northern Hemisphere and one of the most widely distributed conifers in the world. Juniper berries are best known as the primary flavouring in gin, but they have a long history of medicinal and ritual use as well.
Juniper berry essential oil has a fresh, clean, woody, and slightly piney aroma with a distinctive fruity-sweet quality from the berries, along with crisp herbal and green undertones. The main aromatic constituents include alpha-pinene, sabinene, and myrcene, which create its characteristic fresh, forest-like character. Berry-only distillates tend to have a more rounded, slightly sweeter quality than oils distilled from needles and berries combined.
In aromatherapy, juniper berry essential oil is used in purifying, cleansing, and detoxifying preparations. It is a popular choice in massage blends for fluid retention and sluggish circulation, and in diffuser blends for clearing and refreshing spaces. It is also used in preparations for oily skin and scalp conditions. Juniper berry blends well with cedarwood, cypress, lavender, bergamot, rosemary, and other conifer and citrus oils.
Juniper berry essential oil should be avoided during pregnancy and by those with kidney disease. Always dilute before skin application. This 10ml bottle is suitable for use in diffusers, oil burners, and diluted blends. Not for internal use.
