Lime essential oil is cold pressed or steam distilled from the peel of Citrus aurantifolia, a small evergreen tree originally from South and Southeast Asia but now cultivated widely across Mexico, the Caribbean, and tropical regions worldwide. Cold-pressed lime oil retains the most vibrant and true-to-fruit citrus character.
The scent is fresh, sharp, and intensely zesty, with a green, citrusy top note that is more vivid and pungent than lemon or orange essential oil. Steam-distilled lime oil has a slightly softer profile and is generally preferred for use in products applied to the skin, as cold-pressed versions are photosensitive.
In aromatherapy, lime essential oil is prized for its uplifting and energising properties. It is frequently used in diffuser blends designed to improve mental alertness, boost mood, and create a fresh, clean atmosphere. It combines particularly well with other citrus oils including bergamot, lemon, and grapefruit, and also pairs beautifully with cedarwood, vetiver, and ylang ylang.
