Description
Niaouli essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves and young twigs of Melaleuca quinquenervia, a tree native to Australia, New Caledonia, and Papua New Guinea, and now naturalised in parts of the southern United States. It belongs to the same family as tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) and shares some of its clean, medicinal aromatic character.
Niaouli essential oil has a fresh, clean, camphoraceous, and slightly sweet aroma. The main constituent is 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol), typically present at 50 to 65%, which accounts for its eucalyptus-like quality. It also contains alpha-terpineol and other monoterpenes. Niaouli is often compared to eucalyptus but has a somewhat gentler, sweeter character with a slightly more floral note.
In aromatherapy, niaouli essential oil is used in respiratory support blends, where its high cineole content makes it effective in steam inhalation and diffuser preparations. It is also used in skin care formulations and massage blends. Some aromatherapists consider niaouli gentler than eucalyptus and more suitable for sensitive applications. It blends well with eucalyptus, lavender, rosemary, peppermint, and tea tree.
Niaouli essential oil should be diluted before skin application. As with all cineole-rich oils, avoid direct application near the nose of very young children. This 10ml bottle is suitable for use in diffusers, oil burners, and diluted blends. Not for internal use.
