Description
Nutmeg essential oil is steam distilled from the dried seeds (or sometimes the dried aril that forms mace) of Myristica fragrans, a tropical tree native to the Banda Islands of Indonesia, now cultivated in Grenada and other tropical regions. Nutmeg has been a highly prized spice for centuries, central to the historic spice trade of Southeast Asia.
Nutmeg essential oil has a warm, spicy, slightly sweet, and woody aroma with earthy and medicinal undertones. The main aromatic constituents include alpha-pinene, sabinene, myristicin, and elemicin. Myristicin, in particular, contributes to the oil’s distinctive character and is also responsible for the psychoactive effects associated with large oral doses of whole nutmeg; however, the amounts present in aromatherapy use are not a concern.
In aromatherapy, nutmeg essential oil is used in warming, stimulating, and comforting blends. It is particularly popular in winter seasonal diffuser preparations and is a classic note in oriental and spice-based fragrance compositions. It blends beautifully with orange, clove, cinnamon, cedarwood, lavender, and rosemary. In massage blends, it is used in warming preparations for muscles and joints when diluted in a carrier oil.
Nutmeg essential oil should be used in moderation. At high concentrations or with prolonged use, the myristicin content may cause unwanted effects. Always dilute before skin application. This 10ml bottle is suitable for use in diffusers, oil burners, and well-diluted blends. Not for internal use.
