Palmarosa essential oil is steam distilled from the dried grass of Cymbopogon martinii, a member of the lemongrass family native to India and Pakistan. Despite its name, palmarosa is not related to roses or palms; it is a tall grass whose aromatic compound profile gives it a distinctly floral, rose-like scent.
The oil has a sweet, fresh, floral aroma with distinct rose notes and a light hint of geranium. The main constituent is geraniol, typically present at 75 to 95%, which is the same compound responsible for the floral notes in geranium and rose geranium essential oils. This makes palmarosa a more affordable alternative to rose oil in both aromatherapy and natural skincare formulations.
In aromatherapy, palmarosa essential oil is used for its uplifting and balancing properties. It is a popular ingredient in massage blends for the skin and in diffuser blends aimed at reducing nervous tension and supporting emotional wellbeing. It blends beautifully with rose, geranium, bergamot, ylang ylang, cedarwood, and sandalwood.
