Rose absolute is extracted from the petals of Rosa damascena or Rosa centifolia using solvent extraction, a method that preserves the delicate, complex aromatic compounds that would be partially destroyed by steam distillation. This process yields a highly concentrated, semi-solid or thick liquid with an exceptionally rich and true-to-flower rose aroma.
The scent of rose absolute is deep, warm, and intensely floral, with honeyed, slightly spicy undertones and lasting dry-down notes. It is widely regarded as one of the most exquisite and complex floral aromas in natural perfumery. Because rose absolute captures more of the flower’s aromatic profile than rose otto (steam distilled), it is preferred in perfumery applications where a fuller rose character is desired.
In aromatherapy, rose absolute is used for its emotionally balancing and uplifting properties. It is a classic choice for blends focused on the heart, and combines beautifully with sandalwood, jasmine, vetiver, patchouli, bergamot, and ylang ylang. Rose absolute is one of the most labour-intensive and costly essential oils to produce, requiring large quantities of freshly harvested rose petals.
