Description
Spruce essential oil is steam distilled from the needles and twigs of Picea species, most commonly Picea mariana (Black Spruce) or Picea alba (White Spruce), coniferous trees native to the boreal forests of Canada and northern North America. Spruce essential oil captures the clean, crisp scent of the northern forest in concentrated form.
Spruce essential oil has a fresh, clean, woody, and slightly earthy aroma with sweet, balsamic, and camphoraceous undertones. It has a less resinous quality than pine and a lighter, more open character. The main aromatic constituents include bornyl acetate, camphene, limonene, and alpha-pinene, which together create its characteristic fresh forest scent.
In aromatherapy, spruce essential oil is used in grounding and restorative diffuser blends. It is popular in preparations designed to support respiratory function and to create a clean, refreshing atmosphere. Black spruce in particular is highly regarded by aromatherapists for its restorative properties. Spruce blends well with other conifer and tree oils including cedarwood, pine, fir, and juniper, as well as with lavender and frankincense.
