Description

A black obsidian tower, cut and polished into a six sided standing point with a deep, mirror black shine. Choose a large tower, between 19cm and 23cm tall, or a small tower around 9cm for a desk, bedside table or crystal grid. Every tower is a single piece of natural obsidian, and each one is picked by hand from our current stock.

Choose your black obsidian tower

  • Large, £39. A tall statement tower between 19cm and 23cm, weighing around 350g to 500g. Glossy black on every face, with a sharp, clean point. A strong anchor for an altar, a shelf or a protection grid.
  • Small, £12. A slim tower around 9cm tall with the same glassy black polish. Lovely for a pocket, a desk, the centre of a crystal grid or a gift.

Sizes vary a little from tower to tower, as each one is cut from its own piece of stone. The photos show the current towers together.

What black obsidian is

Obsidian is natural volcanic glass. It forms when lava rich in silica cools so quickly that crystals have no time to grow, leaving a smooth, glassy stone. Black obsidian takes its deep colour from tiny traces of iron and magnetite held in the glass.

It has been prized for thousands of years, shaped into blades and arrowheads for its keen edge, and polished into mirrors for looking and scrying.

Black obsidian in crystal practice

Black obsidian is traditionally known as one of the most protective stones, linked with the root chakra and with grounding, clearing and shadow work. A black obsidian tower is often placed by the front door, beside a bed or at the heart of a protection grid, with the point drawing energy upward and away.

Its dark mirror shine suits the darker half of the year, the waning and dark moon, and Samhain, when the veil is said to be thin. Many people pair it with smoky quartz or black tourmaline for protection, or with clear quartz to balance its deep, heavy feel.

Correspondences are traditional and are offered as part of a practice, not as a substitute for medical or professional advice.

Caring for your black obsidian tower

Obsidian is around 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale and, like all glass, it can chip if it is knocked or dropped. Stand it on a flat surface away from the edge of a shelf, and keep it apart from harder crystals.

A soft cloth brings back the mirror shine. Rinse with water if needed, or cleanse with sound, breath or moonlight.
