Helichrysum essential oil, also known as immortelle or everlasting, is steam distilled from the flowers of Helichrysum italicum, a small aromatic shrub native to the Mediterranean, particularly Corsica, Sardinia, and the Balkans. It is one of the most highly prized and expensive essential oils in aromatherapy and natural skin care, valued for its exceptional skin-regenerative properties.
Helichrysum essential oil has a rich, warm, honey-like, and slightly herbaceous aroma with fruity and woody undertones, and a faint note reminiscent of curry. The main aromatic constituents include neryl acetate, alpha-pinene, and gamma-curcumene. The oil also contains italidiones, which are unique to helichrysum and are believed to contribute to its distinctive therapeutic properties in skin care.
In aromatherapy and natural skin care, helichrysum essential oil is prized above almost all others for its effects on the skin. It is used in high-end formulations for mature, scarred, or damaged skin, and is frequently found in anti-ageing and skin recovery preparations.
