Description
Myrtle essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves and twigs of Myrtus communis, the common myrtle, a fragrant shrub native to the Mediterranean region and North Africa. Myrtle has been a sacred plant in Mediterranean cultures for thousands of years, associated with love, beauty, and marriage in Greek and Roman mythology, and used in traditional medicine across the region.
Myrtle essential oil has a fresh, clean, slightly camphoraceous, and gently herbal aroma with sweet, floral, and slightly citrus undertones. The main aromatic constituents include 1,8-cineole, alpha-pinene, linalool, and myrtenyl acetate, which together give it a softer, more refined quality than eucalyptus while sharing some of its fresh, medicinal character. Myrtle has a gentler, more elegant aromatic profile compared to other cineole-rich oils.
In aromatherapy, myrtle essential oil is valued for its gentle approach to respiratory support. It is considered one of the safer camphoraceous oils and has been traditionally used for children’s respiratory preparations, though professional guidance should always be sought. In natural skin care, myrtle is used in preparations for oily or combination skin. It blends well with lavender, bergamot, lemon, eucalyptus, rosemary, and other Mediterranean herbs.
Myrtle essential oil is generally well-tolerated. Always dilute before skin application. This 10ml bottle is suitable for use in diffusers, oil burners, and diluted skin care and massage preparations. Not for internal use.
