Choose your moonstone sphere

• A, blue flash, 7cm, 474g, £55. A soft cream body warming to pale peach, with fine silky lines running all the way through. Turn it slowly and a clear blue flash glides across the surface, then slips away again.
• B, white, 6cm, 276g, £35. Milky cream and pale grey with a gentle pearly sheen that moves as the light changes.
• C, white, 5cm, 202g, £30. A smaller sphere in soft white with grey shadows, an easy size to hold in the palm during meditation.

Where the glow comes from

Moonstone is a feldspar made of very thin layers laid down as the stone formed. Light slips between those layers and scatters back out, which gives the soft floating glow known as adularescence. In some pieces, like sphere A, the layers are just the right thickness to throw a flash of blue. It shows best under a single lamp or by a window, and moves as the sphere turns.

Why people love moonstone

Moonstone has long been tied to the moon and its cycles, and is traditionally kept close through new beginnings, when one chapter is closing and another is opening. It is associated with steadying the emotions and quietening a busy mind, and is a favourite for meditation and dream work. A moonstone sphere sits naturally on a moon altar for new moon intentions and full moon release, and folklore has long called it a travellers stone.

Caring for moonstone

Moonstone sits around 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, a little softer than quartz, and it can split along its layers if knocked. Keep your moonstone sphere away from harder stones and set it down gently. A dry soft cloth is all it needs. Many people like to leave theirs out under the full moon to cleanse, or use sound or breath.
