Grapefruit essential oil is cold pressed from the outer peel of Citrus paradisi, a citrus fruit believed to be a natural hybrid of the pomelo and sweet orange, first documented in Barbados in the 18th century. Cold pressing preserves the fresh, true-to-fruit aroma of the peel far better than steam distillation.
Grapefruit essential oil has a bright, fresh, sweet-tart citrus aroma with a slightly bitter, zesty edge. The dominant constituent is limonene, typically present at 88 to 95%, which is responsible for its clean, uplifting citrus character. The oil also contains nootkatone, the compound responsible for the distinctive bitter grapefruit undertone that distinguishes it from other citrus oils.
In aromatherapy, grapefruit essential oil is widely used for its uplifting and energising effects. It is a popular choice for morning diffuser blends, mood-lifting room sprays, and invigorating massage preparations. It is frequently included in body care and slimming blends alongside juniper berry and ginger essential oils. Grapefruit blends beautifully with other citrus oils, as well as with bergamot, lavender, geranium, and ylang ylang.
Grapefruit essential oil is phototoxic and should not be applied to skin exposed to the sun or UV light. As a cold-pressed citrus oil, use in low dilutions on skin and avoid sun exposure for at least 12 hours after application. This 10ml bottle is suitable for diffusers, oil burners, and diluted blends. Not for internal use.
