Description
Spanish marjoram essential oil is steam distilled from the flowering tops and leaves of Thymus mastichina, a species of thyme native to Spain and Portugal. Despite being called “Spanish marjoram”, this oil is botanically a thyme species, not a true marjoram (Origanum majorana). It is named for its marjoram-like aroma rather than its botanical classification.
Spanish marjoram essential oil has a fresh, herbal, camphoraceous, and slightly floral aroma with warm, slightly spicy undertones. The main constituent is 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol), typically present at 60 to 75%, which gives it a clean, fresh, medicinal character similar to eucalyptus. This distinguishes it significantly from sweet marjoram (Origanum majorana), which is warm, spicy, and herbaceous with a lower cineole content.
In aromatherapy, Spanish marjoram essential oil is primarily used in respiratory support preparations, where its high cineole content makes it effective in steam inhalation and diffuser blends. It is also used in massage preparations for muscles and joints. It blends well with eucalyptus, lavender, rosemary, peppermint, and thyme essential oils for respiratory and invigorating blends.
Spanish marjoram essential oil is generally well-tolerated but should be diluted before skin application. As with other cineole-rich oils, it should not be applied directly to the face or near the nose of infants and young children. This 10ml bottle is suitable for diffusers, oil burners, and diluted blends. Not for internal use.
