Description
Citronella essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves and stems of Cymbopogon nardus or Cymbopogon winterianus, grass species in the same family as lemongrass. It is one of the most widely recognised essential oils globally, best known for its use as a natural insect repellent.
The scent of citronella essential oil is fresh, clean, and lemony with a hint of floral and grassy notes. The principal aromatic constituents include citronellal, geraniol, and citronellol, which together give the oil its characteristic bright citrus character. The Java type (from C. winterianus) is generally considered the higher quality variant with a more refined scent.
In aromatherapy, citronella essential oil is used primarily in outdoor diffusion and topical preparations to deter insects. Beyond this, it is used in room sprays, candles, and cleaning products for its fresh, deodorising properties. It blends well with other citrus oils including lemon, bergamot, and orange, and also combines nicely with geranium, cedarwood, and lavender.
Citronella essential oil is generally well-tolerated but should be diluted before skin application. It is not recommended for use on young children without professional guidance.
