Lemon tea tree essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves of Leptospermum petersonii, a small tree native to subtropical Australia. Despite its common name, lemon tea tree is not closely related to either regular lemon (Citrus limon) or tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia). It belongs to the same family as tea tree but has a very different chemical composition and aromatic profile.
Lemon tea tree essential oil has a bright, fresh, intensely lemony aroma with green, herbal, and slightly citronella-like notes. The main aromatic constituents include citral, citronellal, and geraniol, which together create its characteristic crisp, clean lemon-citrus character. The high citral content gives it a sharper, more medicinal quality than true lemon essential oil.
In aromatherapy, lemon tea tree essential oil is used for its fresh, purifying, and uplifting properties. It is a popular choice for diffusion in spaces where a clean, bright, lemon atmosphere is desired. It is also used in natural cleaning formulations, insect-deterrent preparations, and as a refreshing alternative to other citrus oils. It blends well with eucalyptus, lavender, tea tree, bergamot, geranium, and other citrus and herbal oils.
