Description
Peppermint essential oil is steam distilled from the aerial parts of Mentha piperita, a natural hybrid of watermint and spearmint native to Europe and now cultivated worldwide. Peppermint is one of the most widely used and studied essential oils in the world, with a very long history of use in herbal medicine, confectionery, oral care, and aromatherapy.
Peppermint essential oil has a sharp, intensely cooling, fresh, and penetrating minty aroma with a characteristic icy, mentholic quality. The dominant constituents are menthol (typically 35 to 55%) and menthone (15 to 30%), which together create the characteristic cool, refreshing, and invigorating scent. Menthol also creates the distinctive physical cooling sensation when applied to skin, where it activates cold receptors without actually lowering temperature.
In aromatherapy, peppermint essential oil is used in diffuser blends for mental alertness, focus, and energy, and as a pick-me-up in the afternoon. In massage preparations, diluted peppermint oil is applied topically for its cooling and refreshing effects on tired muscles and aching heads. It is also used in digestive support preparations and in natural cleaning products. Peppermint blends well with eucalyptus, lavender, rosemary, spearmint, lemon, and most other essential oils.
Peppermint essential oil should not be applied directly to the face or near the nose of infants or children under five. Always dilute before skin application. This 10ml bottle is suitable for use in diffusers, oil burners, and diluted blends. Not for internal use.
