Description

Sage essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves and flowering tops of Salvia officinalis, common sage, a perennial herb native to the Mediterranean and widely cultivated as a culinary and medicinal plant throughout Europe and beyond. Sage has a long history of use in cooking, herbal medicine, and traditional ceremonial practices across many cultures.

Sage essential oil has a strong, warm, herbaceous, and slightly camphoraceous aroma with clean, dry, and slightly spicy undertones. The main aromatic constituents include alpha-thujone and beta-thujone (together typically 30 to 60%), along with camphor, 1,8-cineole, and linalool. The thujone content is significant and gives sage its characteristic strong, medicinal character. Note that sage essential oil is distinct from clary sage (Salvia sclarea), which has a much lower thujone content and different aromatic profile.

In aromatherapy, sage essential oil is used in small amounts in diffuser and massage blends. Due to its thujone content, it should always be used at low concentrations and is not suitable for prolonged use. It is sometimes used in steam inhalation preparations and diluted blends for scalp and hair care. Sage blends well with lavender, rosemary, clary sage, orange, and cedarwood.

Sage essential oil should be used with caution due to its thujone content. It is not suitable for use during pregnancy, by children, or by those with epilepsy. Always dilute before skin application. This 10ml bottle is for use in diffusers and diluted preparations only. Not for internal use.
