New Moon in Leo Ritual: 5 Stones for the 12 August Eclipse

Carnelian and black obsidian laid out for a new moon in Leo ritual

Why the usual intention setting is the wrong tool this month, and what to do instead

The new moon falls at 6.37pm on Wednesday 12 August, at twenty degrees of Leo. If you keep a monthly practice, this is the month to change it. Here is a new moon in Leo ritual built for what this particular moon is actually doing.

The Moon at a Glance

  • New moon exact: 6.37pm BST, Wednesday 12 August 2026
  • Degree: 20 degrees and 2 minutes of Leo
  • Also: a solar eclipse, falling at the South Node
  • Best window for the ritual: the evening of the 12th, or any time up to the evening of the 14th

Why This One Is Different

Every new moon carries the same instruction. Begin something. Write it down. Say what you want.

Not this one, and it is worth understanding why rather than simply being told.

A solar eclipse is a new moon with the volume turned up, and this one sits on the South Node, which is the releasing end of the lunar axis. North Node eclipses read as intake, as something arriving. South Node eclipses read as completion, as something being set down.

So the ordinary new moon ritual is not weak here. It is pointed the wrong way. Writing out a list of wants on a moon whose whole character is release is like planting seed on a waning moon and wondering why nothing swelled. The moon is not the same tool on every night of the month, and this is one of the nights that proves it.

This moon does not want a list of what you want. It wants the name of what is already over.

Four Points in One Sign

The other reason this lunation feels louder than most is that Leo is crowded.

Mercury, Jupiter, the Sun and Moon together, and the South Node, all in one sign at once.

Mercury at five degrees puts the emphasis on how you say things, and Leo says things with the volume up. Expect conversations this fortnight to land harder than intended, in both directions.

Jupiter at nine degrees enlarges whatever it touches. In Leo that means the story you tell about yourself gets bigger, which is wonderful when the story is generous and exhausting when it is a grievance.

The Sun and Moon together at twenty degrees are the eclipse itself. This is the point where the light goes.

The South Node at nearly thirty degrees is the end of the sign, and it marks what is being set down rather than picked up.

Four points in one sign is a lot of one flavour. Leo is the sign of being seen, of performance in the honest sense, of taking up the space you actually occupy. With this much of it at once, whatever you have been performing tends to become obvious, first to other people and then, usually a few days later, to you.

What Leo Is Really Asking

Leo has a reputation for showing off, which misses the point rather badly.

The Leo question is not do people admire you. It is whether the version of yourself you put in front of people is one you recognise. Leo goes wrong not through vanity but through performance, through keeping up a presentation that stopped being true a while ago and has become a job of work to maintain.

An eclipse in Leo tends to take the effort out of your hands. Something you were holding up stops being holdable, usually because you are simply too tired to keep it up, and the relief afterwards is considerable and slightly embarrassing.

That is what the ritual below is for. Not stopping it. Naming it, so you are ahead of it rather than behind.

A New Moon in Leo Ritual

This runs on sound, on breath and on what your body notices. It needs no visualising and nothing you have to buy. Fifteen minutes, outdoors if you can, by an open window if not.

Before you begin

Take one stone from the list below and hold it in your left hand. Have something to write with, and one candle if you like a candle. Do not tidy first. The tidying is avoidance.

The sequence

  • Settle. Stand or sit and stop managing your breath. Let it find its own length. This usually takes longer than people expect, so give it a minute.
  • Listen outward. Send your hearing as far as it reaches, to the furthest sound you can find. Then let it come back to the nearest one. Three times, slowly.
  • Name what is finished. Say it aloud. Not a wish, not a plan. One thing that is already over that you have been carrying as though it were not. If nothing comes, ask instead what you are tired of holding up, and say that.
  • Feel where it sits. Notice where in your body you registered that sentence as you said it. Throat, chest, jaw, stomach. Do not analyse it. Just put your hand there for a few breaths.
  • Write one line. Not a list. One line, the same sentence you said aloud. Fold it and put it under the stone.
  • Make a sound. A bell, a bowl, a hummed note, a single clap. Let it run all the way out to nothing.
  • Stay for the silence. This is the part of the ritual, not the gap before the next part. Leo wants to fill a silence. Let this one sit.

Leave the paper where it is until 28 August. That is the lunar eclipse that closes this season, and it is the natural point to finish what began here.

On that morning, take the paper out and read it once. If it is still true, burn it safely or bury it. If it has already stopped being true, which happens more often than you would think, simply throw it away without ceremony. Both are correct endings.

Crystals for This New Moon

Five, and you do not need all of them. One will do.

Carnelian

Carnelian is the Leo stone for this lunation, warm and orange and unmistakably solar. Hold it for the naming. It suits the part of this that takes nerve, because saying aloud what is finished is harder than writing down what you want.

Black obsidian

Black obsidian is volcanic glass and the stone of the honest look. It is the one to choose if you suspect you already know what is finished and have been avoiding saying so. Not comfortable. Accurate.

Smoky quartz

Rough smoky quartz is the gentler centre. Choose it if eclipse weeks tend to leave you rattled, or if you are doing this ritual at the end of an already difficult fortnight. It settles rather than confronts.

Mookaite

Mookaite is earthy and red and yellow, and it is the practical one. It suits the days afterwards rather than the night itself, when something has been named and you have to decide what to actually do about it.

Selenite

Selenite is for afterwards. Rest whichever stone you used on it overnight once you have finished. A stone that has held a naming wants clearing before it does anything else.

One note about charging. Do not set your stones out to charge on this moon or on 28 August.

Cleansing is fine and many people prefer an eclipse for it, since an eclipse suits taking away. Charging is the one to hold off on, because the condition of the moon decides what a working does and an eclipse is not a night you can read. The next full moon with no shadow in it is 26 September.

If You Want to Set Intentions Anyway

You are perfectly entitled to, and nothing bad will happen. But there is a better option than forcing it.

Wait. The new moon on 11 September falls in Virgo with no eclipse anywhere near it, and it is a far better night for beginning something. Virgo is practical, detailed and unbothered by drama, which is exactly what you want when you are actually starting work rather than announcing it.

Or reframe rather than reschedule. Every ending clears a space, so instead of writing what you want, write what the thing you have named was taking up. Time, attention, a room in the house, a certain amount of pretending. Naming the space is a beginning, and it is the honest one available on this particular moon.

To Sit With Afterwards

  • What am I performing that nobody actually asked me to perform?
  • Where have I been keeping up an old version of myself out of habit rather than choice?
  • What did I feel in my body when I said it aloud, and what does that tell me?
  • What ended a while ago that I have never said had ended?

Stones for the Naming

Carnelian for the nerve, obsidian for the honesty, selenite for afterwards. All three together cost less than a takeaway.
