Description
This Black Sage smudge stick is black sage, darker and more herbal than white sage, with an earthy, slightly minty scent. Each bundle is about 10cm long and 3cm wide, weighs around 33g, and is hand tied from dried herbs grown in Mexico.
Black sage is traditionally burned for deeper clearing work and for quiet, reflective ritual, especially during the waning moon.
How to use a smudge stick
- Hold the bundle at an angle and light the tip with a match or lighter.
- Let it catch for a few seconds, then gently blow out the flame so the leaves smoulder.
- Carry it slowly around the room over a heatproof dish or shell, letting the smoke drift into corners and doorways. Opening a window is traditional, so the old air has somewhere to go.
- To finish, press the lit end firmly into sand, soil or the dish until it is fully out. The same stick can be relit many times.
You can also pass crystals, tarot cards or jewellery through the smoke as a simple way to cleanse them. Our guide on how to cleanse crystals covers other gentle methods too.
Safety
Never leave a smouldering stick unattended, keep it away from children, pets and anything that can catch, and always use a heatproof dish to catch embers.
Traditional uses are shared as part of a personal practice and are not a substitute for medical or professional advice.
