Retrograde Crystals: Your Guide to the Autumn 2026 Retrograde Season

Surviving and Thriving During Retrogrades: A Crystal Guide title card from Mystic Grove

Retrograde crystals for the autumn 2026 retrograde season, planet by planet

From Saturday 24 October to Friday 13 November 2026, five planets are retrograde at the same time. This guide explains what is really happening in the sky, what each retrograde is traditionally said to ask of us, and the retrograde crystals that make good companions while it all plays out.

Retrograde crystals and the autumn 2026 retrograde season

Most of the year, one or two planets are retrograde somewhere in the background and life carries on. This autumn is different. Mercury turns retrograde in Scorpio on the morning of Saturday 24 October, and when it does it joins Venus, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus, which are already moving backwards. For almost three weeks, five planets are retrograde together.

That can sound alarming, and a lot of what you will read online this month leans into the drama. We would rather give you something useful: the real astronomy, the traditional meaning of each retrograde, and a short list of retrograde crystals for each planet, all of which you can find in our shop.

Here are the dates, all in UK time.

  • Neptune retrograde in Aries: 7 July to Saturday 12 December 2026.
  • Saturn retrograde in Aries: 26 July to Thursday 10 December 2026.
  • Uranus retrograde in Gemini: 10 September 2026 to Monday 8 February 2027.
  • Venus retrograde: Saturday 3 October in Scorpio, moving back into Libra on 25 October, turning direct on Saturday 14 November.
  • Mercury retrograde in Scorpio: Saturday 24 October to Friday 13 November, turning direct just before 4pm UK time.

What a retrograde really is

No planet ever stops and reverses. A retrograde is an optical effect of watching the sky from a moving Earth. Picture overtaking a slower car on the motorway. For a moment, against the hills behind it, the other car seems to slip backwards, even though both of you are moving forwards the whole time. Planets do the same against the background stars.

This is not a modern discovery. Ancient astronomers watched Mars and Jupiter loop backwards across the sky and built complicated systems of circles within circles to explain it. In 1543 Copernicus offered the simpler answer: the loop appears because Earth is overtaking, or being overtaken by, the other planet. If you would like the astronomy in more detail, WorldAtlas has a clear explainer on retrograde motion.

Astrology reads that apparent backward step as a change of pace. The planet’s themes turn inward. It becomes a time for the words that start with re: review, revisit, repair, rest, reflect. That is a much gentler picture than the reputation retrogrades have picked up.

A retrograde does not undo your plans. It asks you to look at them again before you carry on.

Why retrogrades get such a bad name

Mercury retrograde in particular has become a catch all excuse. A delayed train, a lost parcel or a text sent to the wrong person, and someone sighs that Mercury is retrograde again. The dread is a fairly recent habit. Older astrological writing treats a retrograde as a planet working differently rather than a planet working against you.

The practical advice has always been sensible rather than frightening. Read things twice before you sign them. Back up your phone. Leave extra time for journeys. Say the thing you meant to say clearly, rather than hoping it lands. None of that needs a crisis, and all of it works in any month of the year.

Your retrograde crystal toolkit

Before we go planet by planet, a few stones are worth having to hand for the whole season. They are the ones we reach for most when several things are in motion at once.

Smoky quartz, for steadying

Smoky quartz is traditionally used for grounding and for clearing the mind when it feels crowded. A small smoky quartz tower on a desk is a quiet reminder to come back to the task in front of you.

Clear quartz, for clarity

Clear quartz is the all rounder of the crystal world. Traditionally it is said to amplify whatever intention you set with it, and it can stand in for almost any other stone in this guide if you are short.

Selenite, for keeping things clear

Selenite is traditionally used for cleansing other crystals and the space around them. Rest your retrograde stones on a selenite charging plate overnight. Selenite is soft and does not like water, so keep it dry and dust it gently.

Retrograde crystals for each planet

Each retrograde is traditionally said to touch a different part of life. Here is what each one asks of us this autumn and the crystals that sit well alongside it.

Mercury retrograde in Scorpio, 24 October to 13 November

Mercury rules communication, thinking, travel and technology. In Scorpio, a deep and private sign, this retrograde is less about missed emails and more about what goes unsaid. It is a good window for honest conversations you have been putting off and for reading the small print twice.

Mercury goes direct on 13 November, but astrologers usually allow a shadow period afterwards, until around 30 November, while Mercury retraces its steps. Save big launches and signatures for December if you can.

Fluorite

Fluorite is traditionally the stone of order and clear thinking, for the days when ideas tangle. Our rainbow fluorite tower sits well beside a laptop.

Sodalite

Sodalite, deep blue with white veining, is traditionally linked with honest, calm communication and the throat chakra. Hold a sodalite tower before a difficult conversation.

Howlite

Howlite is traditionally kept for patience and a calmer mind, which is exactly what a Mercury retrograde tests. It is lovely on a bedside table if your thoughts race at night.

Venus retrograde in Scorpio and Libra, 3 October to 14 November

Venus rules love, friendship, beauty, money and what we value. Venus retrograde is traditionally a time to revisit relationships and your own sense of worth, rather than rush into something new. Old flames and old habits can resurface. Astrologers often advise against big changes to your appearance or large purchases until Venus is direct.

Rose quartz

Rose quartz is the classic stone of love and self care. A rose quartz tower by the bed makes a gentle companion. Rose quartz can fade in strong direct sun, so keep it out of a bright window.

Rhodonite

Rhodonite, pink with black veining, is traditionally associated with emotional balance and forgiveness, which suits a retrograde that brings the past back into view. Try a rhodonite tower.

Green aventurine

Green aventurine is traditionally linked with luck and the heart. It keeps a hopeful note in a season that can feel reflective.

Saturn retrograde in Aries, 26 July to 10 December

Saturn rules structure, time, commitment and responsibility. Saturn retrograde is traditionally a time to review the frameworks you have built: routines, promises, boundaries and long term plans. In Aries, the question is whether your energy is going into the right things.

Obsidian

Obsidian is traditionally used for protection and honest reflection. A polished obsidian sphere is a striking piece for an altar during this long retrograde.

Hematite

Hematite is heavy, metallic and traditionally grounding. Many people like to wear it as a hematite bracelet on busy days.

Neptune retrograde in Aries, 7 July to 12 December

Neptune rules dreams, intuition, imagination and illusion. Neptune retrograde is traditionally the time when the fog lifts and you see more clearly what is real and what was wishful thinking. Dreams can feel vivid.

Amethyst

Amethyst has one of the oldest stories of any crystal. Its name comes from the ancient Greek amethystos, meaning not drunk, and it was once believed to keep the wearer clear headed. That makes it a fitting stone for Neptune. Our amethyst spheres and dream amethyst spheres both sit beautifully by the bed.

Moonstone

Moonstone is traditionally linked with intuition and the moon. It is a soft choice for anyone keeping a dream journal this season.

Uranus retrograde in Gemini, 10 September to 8 February 2027

Uranus rules change, freedom and sudden insight. Retrograde, its energy turns inward: change happens quietly in how you think before it shows in your life. In Gemini, that change often shows up in ideas, learning and conversation.

Labradorite

Labradorite, with its flashes of blue and gold, is traditionally the stone of transformation and new beginnings. A labradorite tower or labradorite sphere shows its flash best where the light moves.

Lepidolite

Lepidolite is a soft lilac stone traditionally kept for calm during times of transition. It suits a long, slow retrograde like this one.

A note on care. Crystals are part of a spiritual practice and a lovely way to mark the season. They are not a substitute for medical or professional advice, and nothing here should replace it.

How to use your retrograde crystals

You do not need every stone on this list. One or two chosen with care will do more than a full tray you never look at. Here are a few simple ways to work with them.

Cleanse them first

Cleanse your crystals before you begin, traditionally with incense smoke, a singing bowl or a night on selenite.

Carry one, place one

Carry a small stone for the retrograde that touches you most, and place a larger piece, such as a tower, where you work or sleep. Each time you notice it, take one slow breath and come back to your intention.

Lay a simple retrograde layout

For the overlap window, try a five stone layout on an altar cloth such as our Metatron’s Cube cloth. Place smoky quartz at the centre to steady things. Then set fluorite for Mercury, rose quartz for Venus, obsidian for Saturn and amethyst for Neptune and Uranus around it. Clear quartz can stand in for any stone you do not have.

Light a candle for the review

Retrograde season is a natural time for candle work focused on reflection and release. A black candle is traditionally used for clearing, and a white or silver one for clarity. Our black spell candles and chime candles burn in a single sitting. Never leave a lit candle unattended.

Write it down

Keep a few lines in a journal through the season. What came back to you? What did you see differently? Our moonstone leather journal is a lovely place to keep them.

Journal prompts for retrograde season

  • What conversation have I been putting off, and what would I say if I were being completely honest?
  • Which relationship or habit keeps coming back, and what is it asking of me?
  • Which commitment no longer fits, and which deserves more of my time?
  • Where have I been seeing what I wanted to see rather than what is there?
  • What has quietly changed in how I think since September?
